I have 2 sons. One is 3 months old, one is 2 years. My 2 year old had a rare problem of my antibodies destroying his platelets while in the womb. He was born with very low platelets and received a platelet transfusion right after birth. He then went on to do great. The second son had the high possibility of the same thing occurring. We did several things to prevent this from happening, but we did not know until he was born if he would have the same problem. LifeShare in Shreveport had compatible donors on standby. I then had to deliver early due to complications. Actually the day before Thanksgiving. One donor went out of his way to donate platelets just in case we needed them and another was willing to drive a long way to donate. These donors gave so selflessly. Since I have a rare platelet type, I will definitely donate my platelets as soon as I am able (post delivery recovery) to be able to help others with this or similar problems.
