Shreveport Mayoral Candidate Profiles: Jones & Goeders

2010 Vote

POSTED: 6:41 pm CDT September 7, 2010
UPDATED: 7:55 pm CDT September 7, 2010
In the 2010 vote and the race for Shreveport mayor, two men in that race are hoping that voters will want to see a fresh face in office. But this is not their first run for the city's top spot. Republican Tim Goeders and independent candidate Hersy Jones have very different priorities.

Goeders and Jones are hoping time is on their side. The two first ran for Shreveport mayor 20 years ago, and both are in the business world.

Jones is a business consultant dealing with mainly federal programs. Goeders is self employed and worked in many areas of business. But that's where the similarity ends. Both men have different ideas for revitalizing the city.

Independent candidate Hersy Jones, who grew up in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, says his first step would be to rebuild Shreveport's inner city. To do that, Jones would re-allocate $100 million from the city's proposed bond election. $90 million of that would come from bond money allocated for water and sewer. Jones say the federal government will eventually pay for those improvements.

Republican Tim Goeders wants to the see the city capitalize on natural gas, and focus on economic development. He wants to use the city's portion of Haynesville Shale money to establish a city department of economic development which could offer tax incentives to new and existing businesses. The state already has a similar department, but Goeders believes state budget cuts will eventually limit what it can do to help businesses.

Two men, two ideas, they hope to bring to the mayor's office. Next Monday we'll profile Roy Burrell.
