POSTED: 9:15 pm CDT August 29, 2010
Hurricane Katrina, then a category five hurricane, made landfall five years ago today. It happened around daybreak, with winds over 145 mph. It is estimated that there was a coastal storm surge flooding of 18 to 22 feet above normal tide levels. The National Hurricane Center said in a public advisory issued at 6 AM that some levees in New Orleans could be over-topped.

By 10 PM on August 29th, Katrina was weakening and was moving over northeastern Mississippi. Winds had decreased to 60 mph.
