Post Storm Sounding Still Shows Strong Wind Shear

POSTED: 8:58 pm CDT September 7, 2010
Tropical Storm Hermine brought severe storms to the ArkLaTex earlier this afternoon and evening. A half dozen Tornado Warnings were issued for severe storms with strong rotation. Fortunately, only one report of severe weather came out of all of those warnings for some minor tree damage near Hope, AR. There, the top of a large tree was twisted off.

And speaking of twist, tonight's sounding from the Shreveport National Weather Service and www.rap.ucar.edu showed a great amount of directional and speed shear or atmospheric spin or twist. The wind barbs on the right side of the graph go from SE at the surface to SW at about 500 mb. Velocities were from 15 to 25 knots with the direction changes.

The Hodograph at the top left shows a decent wind plot like a downward facing letter "c" making for good low level directional wind shear. It's not as good as some of our more violent nights, but the wind shear was enough to warrant tornado warnings.

There still was some post storm environment CAPE or storm energy in the sounding. You would have to just break the low level cap to tap into it. A front or some strong vertical lift could help. It's not too likely for the rest of the night.

Tropical storms or depressions (inland one's) tend to wind down at night with the convection pulling back toward the center. These type of storms will open up with afternoon heating spreading showers/storms away from the center.

This may be the case again tomorrow with a decent chance of more showers/storms.

Have a good night.
