I Cut Through The BCS Mess

Okay... time to get down to the nitty-gritty regarding the BCS.  Florida is the overwhelming number one team in the current BCS standings released today (Sunday, November 1st).  Texas is second, followed by Alabama, Iowa, Cincinnati, TCU, Boise State, Oregon and LSU to make up the top 9 teams.  BCS "experts" generally agree LSU and Oregon are the only two "one-loss" teams with a chance to advance far enough in the standings to play for all the marbles.

 

The Tim Fletcher Research Group (me) spent a little time this evening going over the Nice Nine.  Here are the things that stick out to me:

 

  • Florida has it EASY the rest of the way
  • Boise State and TCU have no business in the conversation based on their opponents' records and the strength of their remaining schedule
  • Iowa and Oregon are the only teams to be featured among the top four in opponents records thus far and their upcoming opponents records. That's why the computer's love the Hawkeyes and the Ducks
  • Iowa, Alabama and LSU have the most to gain over the final stretch based on the records of their upcoming opponents.
