Police Operation Impacts Citizens

Chief Kicks Off First Community Meeting

Dozens of people filled Broadmoor Baptist Church Thursday night to meet the new Shreveport Police Chief, voice their concerns and listen to his plans to make the city safer.

Chief Willie Shaw, Jr. says Operaion: I.M.P.A.C.T. has been very successful since it began about six weeks ago.

Officers have made 39 felony arrests, served nearly 100 warrants, seized four guns and 400 grams of marijuana.

The operation, which involves several local law enforcement agencies, focuses on everything from shootings, assaults, property damage to loud music complaints.

Chief Shaw says the key to fighting crime effectively is building bridges between police and citizens.

"Once the community sees we're out there doing the job, they become more comfortable with giving us information," said Shaw.

The chief is hosting three more community meetings.

Tuesday, August 17, at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in the 3-thousand block of Greenwood Road.

Thursday, August 19, at Louisiana Technical College in the 2-thousand block of N. Market.

Thursday, August 26, at the Southern Hills Community Center in the 1-thousand block of Bert Kouns Industrial Loop.

Each meeting begins at six o'clock.
