S.W.A.T. Tackles Heat

Team Members Prepare All Year Long

When it comes to tackling the bad guys and the heat, nobody does it better than members of the Desoto sheriff's S.W.A.T. team.

Members spent Wednesday running, crawling, lifting and shooting in triple digit temperatures, but the "100" on the thermometer was just a number to them.

To make it on the S.W.A.T. team, members must be in top physical condition. Members say they work out nearly every day.

Thomas Williamson, 58, is the team's oldest member. He says he runs two miles day, does push-ups between laps and sprints up and down the bleachers at North DeSoto High School.

There's no such thing as an easy jog to the S.W.A.T. team.

"I haven't gotten into a chase yet where I jogged a mile and somebody fell down for me," said Deputy Kyle Martin who believes variety is the key to staying in great shape.

The S.W.A.T. runs through an intense obstacle course at least once a week. Each obstacle on the course represents an obstacle on the streets, but the streets aren't as forgiving.

"Usually he have at least twenty pounds of gear on as a minimum. Sometimes more depending on how they want to carry their stuff," said team leader Cpl. Dusty Herring.

Herring says DeSoto S.W.A.T. has been involved in two massive manhunts in the last month and members couldn't have lasted very long had they not been in great shape.
