More Violence Against Officers
Police Victims Of Attacks
Shreveport police rookie officer, Joseph Bassett, learned in the academy how dangerous his job can be, but he's seeing it first-hand on the streets. In the three months since Bassett's been patrolling with his field training officer, several officers have been the victims of violence. One officer was rammed on I-49, one was dragged by a car, one had a gun pointed at him and Monday night, one was stabbed in his neck."In the occasion where we are faced with those kind of situations that are dangerous and other people would run... we do not," said Chief Willie Shaw, Jr.Chief Shaw says the officers survived the attacks because of their training."They go over a lot of different situations that could happen and how to respond to them," said Bassett while reflecting on his academy training.Bassett's field training officer, John Madjerick, is no stranger to violence against officers.Madjerick was shot while working a burglary detail in January 2008. He says the thought of leaving the job never crossed his mind."Everybody who stays here, works here and wears this uniform is here for the citizens." said Madjerick.Officers say keeping citizens safe is their number one priority even if it means risking their own safety.
