"Lucky Seven" Graduate Fire Academy
When seven young men graduated from the LSU Fire & Emergency Training Institute at Pine Country, they became more than just firefighters, they became the "Lucky Seven."For the first time in the institute's history, every single person who started the class ended it."It's very rare not to lose at least one or two during an academy. To keep seven through 14-weeks of training is quite a feat," said lead instructor Sonny Cudd.Justin Woodall and Jody Wainwright say the toughest part of the training was the heat. They say it made some of the exercises unbearable."It'd be 115-degrees and we'd be in full gear. I was like man, I don't know if I can keep on doing this, but it we'd pull together and get it done," said Wainwright who will be working for the Ruston Fire Department. The seven graduates say they couldn't have done it alone. They relied heavily on each other for everything from studying for tests to coping with missing their families."There was never a time where one person wasn't down and there was somebody right there behind him to pick him back up," said Woodall who has wanted to be a firefighter since childhood."That's brotherhood. That's why we're here for each other. One guy falls, the other guys pick him up and we keep on going," explained Cudd.Even though they'll be going to different departments and cities, the new firefighters will always be together. They say there's no separating the "Lucky Seven."
