Going To School On A Crowded Bus

When one school bus pulls up to Summer Grove Elementary School in southwest Shreveport, more than 60 students pile off.

That many children on one bus has some parents questioning what's going on. Not only are there too many kids on board, they say, but some of the bigger ones pick on the younger ones.

Caddo Parish school officials have gotten complaints and are looking into the situation.

"That's kind of dangerous to have that many kids and one person trying to supervise all those kids," one of the parents, Dewanna Moore, said.

Clarence Travers, the school system's supervisor over bus routes, said he's trying to verify what the parents are saying about bullying. He said one of the bus drivers on the route confirmed there are sometimes as many as 66 students on the bus.

Travers said they are looking at altering the bus route to put more students on other buses.

School officials prefer less than 60 students on elementary school buses, although they say it's not against the rules to have three students to a seat.
