Forget for a moment the "wisdom" of whether to build the mosque and Islamic community center near Ground Zero. What about the wisdom of politicians talking about it? And taking the unpopular side of it, at that?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has now weighed in, saying we need to know who's funding the opposition to building the mosque there. She later clarified that she also wants transparency for the mosque's funding, too. But the damage was done.

What damage? Nancy Pelosi is safe in her liberal northern California district, where most people may even agree with her on putting a magnifying glass on the opponents. But her comments just keep the controversy going, giving the GOP more ammo. So instead of talking about their platforms and their issues, Democratic candidates across the country are being asked whether they support Pelosi's comments and President Obama's comments. And the same for GOP candidates, though they get to appear on the side of families of the nearly 3,000 innocent people and heroes who were slaughtered on 9/11.

Where Pelosi isn't safe is her speakership position. And since she's helping politicize the mosque issue and turn Americans against her party, she'll shoulder more of the blame if Democrats lose control of the House.

As for funding of the mosque opponents: how much money does it take to sit in front of a tv camera or post on the internet? It seems to be a silly argument to make.
