Insommia Raises Health Risks
POSTED: 5:21 pm CDT September 1, 2010UPDATED: 6:58 pm CDT September 1, 2010Compared to men who slept six or more hours a night, male chronic insomniacs were four times more likely to die in a 14-year period.
Previous studies have shown that insomnia can increase risks of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. And the current study showed that men were at an even higher risk of death if they suffered from one of these diseases along with insomnia. The study involved 1,700 middle aged men and women.
Female insomniacs did not show the same association with death, and researchers say the reason is unclear.
Although less than six hours of sleep was used as a cutoff point in the study, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends seven to eight hours of nightly sleep to feel rested the next day.
