Hand Transplant Patient Talks About His Recovery
POSTED: 5:52 pm CDT September 2, 2010Richard Edwards can make a full fist with his left hand and move part of his right. Edwards, who underwent an 18 hour transplant procedure last week, is only the third person to receive this type of transplant. "I'm just so grateful that I had a team of doctors that were allowed to think outside the box and take a chance like that. I just don't know what else to say except thank you," said Edwards.
Edwards had his hands severely burned in a fire four years ago. Doctors say there's some risk that his body might reject the transplant, but so far edwards' recovery is about six months ahead of schedule.
