About Dr. Acurio

Dr. Michael T. Acurio has been in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana since 1991. Before his medical practice, Dr. Acurio completed undergraduate studies at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana; graduating Magna Cum Laude. He completed medical studies at Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport before serving an internship at LSUMC-S with rotations at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, LSUMC-S, and Veteran’s Administration Medical Center. His residency was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, with rotations at MUSC, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Roper Hospital, Charleston Memorial Hospital, Naval Hospital, and Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville, South Carolina.

Dr. Acurio is a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Professional memberships include the Shreveport Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, South Carolina Medical Society and Charleston County Medical Society. Additionally, he has been a contributing writer to several scientific orthopedic publications; presenting research information at Continuing Medical Education programs across the country.

In addition to his busy medical practice, Dr. Acurio has five children, aged 6-24.

About Dr. Cooper

Dr. Ellis O’Neal Cooper is the newest addition to the team of 12 orthopedic surgeons at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana, located within the Specialists Health System. He is a board certified and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon. Prior to joining Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana, Dr. Cooper served a distinguished military career as an orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgeon at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas; and as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery 28th Combat Support Hospital in Bagdad, Iraq. He also served in Landstuhl, Germany; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Bosnia-Herzegovenia; and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He has been awarded over a dozen military honors, including two Meritorious Service Medals.

Dr. Cooper, a Shreveport native, completed undergraduate studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, before graduating from the University of Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his Internship and Residency at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Additionally, Dr. Cooper completed a Hand Surgery Fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and The Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He has also co-authored a number of published research papers that have been presented to civilian and military surgical organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Cooper is married with three children, aged 6-14.

About Dr. Googe

Dr. J. David Googe is a fellowship trained sports medicine specialist; specializing in sports medicine and total joint replacement. This includes treating complicated problems of the shoulder, hip and knee.

Dr. Googe returned home to Shreveport two years ago, after completing two fellowships and one residency out-of-state. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine (Complex Surgery of the Shoulder and Knee) at the Lake Tahoe Orthopedic Institute in Nevada, and a fellowship in adult reconstruction (Primary and Revision Reconstruction of the Hip, Knee and Shoulder) at the McBride Orthopedic Clinic and VA Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His residency training was also completed in Oklahoma City at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. His medical training was done at the LSU-Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, and undergraduate degree in biology at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

In addition to his medical education and training, Dr. Googe has served as the associate team physician for the United States Ski Team, and associate team physician for the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, and the New Orleans Hornets. He is currently the team physician for the Shreveport-Bossier City Battlewings.

About Dr. Waddell

Dr. David Waddell is an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in disorders of the knee and sports medicine. He has been in private practice at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana for over thirty years and has the only practice in Louisiana limited to disorders of the knee. During that time, he has been recognized nationally and internationally for his clinical research and innovative design of orthopedic instruments and implants. He has written more than 100 scientific articles and has several U.S. patents that include both total knee instruments and drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis. In addition, he has authored more than 300 patient information articles locally and nationally for television, radio, and print media. He has been on the faculty of more than 45 post graduate orthopedic courses and has presented over 150 scientific presentations in the U.S., China, France, Wales, South Africa, Taiwan, Canada, Bahamas, Portugal, and Brazil.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Biology/Pre-Med from Centenary College in Shreveport, Dr. Waddell received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency at LSUHSC in Shreveport, and completed two fellowships: one in Sports Medicine with Dr. Jack Hughston and Dr. James Andrews in Columbus, Georgia, and the ASIF Traumatology fellowship at the University of Frieberg, West Germany.

He is a fellow of many academic societies, including the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association (AOA), which “signifies outstanding leadership, honor and accomplishment in orthopaedics…” The society only has 1500 members out of more than 35,000 orthopedists in the United States.

Dr. Waddell has performed thousands of arthroscopic procedures and knee arthroplasties over the past three decades. He provides a treatment prospective with extensive experience and judgment as well as cutting edge technology with the latest treatments available.

Dr. Waddell is married to Sharon Gleason Waddell. They have five children.

About Dr. Atchison

Dr. Steven Atchison has been in private practice at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana since 1998. He specializes in disorders of the hip, knee and shoulders – joint replacement, reconstructive surgery and general orthopedics. Dr. Atchison is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, having completed a Total Joint Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Prior to this fellowship, Dr. Atchison completed medical school, and his internship and residency at the LSU-Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. He completed undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge.

Previous academic positions include being Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, and Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the LSU-Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Additionally, Dr. Atchison has participated in numerous medical presentations, including presentations at the Orthopedic Surgery Alumni, Louisiana Orthopedic Association, and Southern Biomedical Engineering group.

About Dr. Cox

Dr. Stephen Cox is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, specializing in treating the foot and ankle. He completed fellowship training at the Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa, Florida, after completing his medical studies, internship (General Surgery), and residency (Orthopedic Surgery) at the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. His undergraduate studies were completed at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, after graduating from Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport.

Dr. Cox is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Florida. He is a member of the Shreveport Medical Society and Louisiana Orthopedic Association. Dr. Cox has participated in a number of medical conferences, including the AO North American Trauma Conference, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and Orthopedic Pathology. Additionally, he has been involved in the research of the evaluation of piezoelectric properties of pineal brain sand, and bioabsorbable syndesmotic screw fixation. Dr. Cox has made medical presentations about the evaluation and treatment of lower extremity problems in Shreveport; and biomechanical comparison of stainless steel and bioabsorbable screw fixation of syndesmotic injuries in New Orleans.

About Dr. Haynie

Dr. G. Michael Haynie is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, specializing in general orthopedics, joint replacement, arthroscopy, and sports medicine. He received his medical degree from the LSU-Health Sciences Center in Shreveport; where he also completed a general surgery residency and orthopedic residency. His undergraduate studies were completed at Louisiana State University-Shreveport. Dr. Haynie has been in private practice at Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana since 1992.

In addition to his medical training and experience, Dr. Haynie has completed additional specialized orthopedic training in prosthetics and orthotics, clinical musculoskeletal pathology, arthroscopy, advanced technologies in total knee replacement and bioskills, and sports medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Louisiana State Medical Society, and the Shreveport Medical Society. He received board certification from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr. Haynie has been involved in a number of Continuing Medical Education programs designed for physicians, including courses in Chicago, Illinois; St. Augustine, Florida; Columbus, Georgia; Little Rock, Arkansas; San Antonio, Texas; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Dallas, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Tampa, Florida; San Diego, California, and Shreveport, Louisiana.

About Dr. Milstead

Dr. Marion E. Milstead completed his medical education in orthopedic surgery at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He also completed Fellowships in Hand Surgery in Louisville, Kentucky and New Orleans. In addition to specializing in disorders of the hand and upper extremity, Dr. Milstead has extensive clinical experience in minimally invasive surgery, rheumatoid surgery, and joint replacement. Additionally, Dr. Milstead is certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry to specialize in the treatment of osteoporosis. He has been in private practice for more than 20 years.
