Garbage is a dirty business. But as the city of Shreveport is finding out, it's also pretty expensive.
An internal audit obtained by KTBS says Shreveport's Woolworth Road landfill has some financial problems. Among them:
-Delinquent payments have added up to $693,823.
-The amoung charged to customers for waste disposal is approximately $250,000 short of covering the annual cost of operating the landfill.
Another problem, according to the report: "As of 2011, it's estimated that the landfill will be at capacity in about 14 years. The city is required to monitor the landfill for 30 years after closure. The city does not set aside or restrict money for the future cost of the closure & post-closure care. It is carried as a long-term liability in the general fund."
Mayor Cedric Glover's office says staff is still in the process of reviewing the information included in the audit report.
