Texas officials say 18 employees of the El Paso State Supported Living Center have been reassigned amid allegations of abuse or neglect involving its special needs residents.
Allison Lowery, with the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, says the investigation could take weeks or months. The employees will not have contact with the residents during that time.
Lowery says the El Paso center has had a total of 67 allegations of abuse or neglect by staff since September.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services investigates the allegations.
The El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/VBY9Qj ) reports that a U.S. Justice Department review last summer confirmed incidents of physical abuse and neglect and said the 145-bed center wasn't adequately addressing causes for injuries.
