A man with a series of arrests for drug crimes was arrested Tuesday for the apparently random murder of a 73-year-old farmer who was killed this past weekend during a robbery at his southwest Caddo Parish home.

Erick Dewayne Crain, 26, faces first-degree murder charges in the slaying of Ernest Luttrell, who is believed to have been killed for his farm truck and some guns. Authorities said they know of no connection between the victim and his accused killer.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Crain Tuesday morning after a standoff at the West 70th Street lot in Shreveport where he lived in a travel trailer.

Acting on a tip that Crain had been seen driving the victim's truck, investigators had gone to the trailer to question him. Crain slammed the door and would not come out of the trailer, which was described by authorities as filthy. A special-response team was called in and they fired a chemical agent into the trailer in order to flush Crain out.

Authorities said Crain has refused to talk to detectives.

Luttrell was shot five times at his home on Greenwood-Springridge Road shortly after his wife left for church Sunday morning. Guns were missing from the house and from Luttrell's truck, which was stolen, authorities said. Luttrell's wife found him when she returned home from church.

Caddo sheriff and Bossier City police records show Crain has arrests for drugs crimes in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and last month -- all involving small amounts of drugs and drug paraphernalia. The only arrest for a violent crime was for battery, deputies said.

Luttrell's truck was found Tuesday morning at a natural gas well site off Meriwether Road. Two deputies on patrol spotted it.
