Sentell To Get His Job Back
D.A. Says Embarrassment Over Casino Episode Was Punishment Enough
POSTED: 4:33 pm CDT July 30, 2010UPDATED: 4:40 pm CDT July 30, 2010MINDEN -- Sherb Sentell, the Webster Parish prosecutor who resigned after he was accused of manhandling his wife at a casino and then threatening the job of an arresting officer, is going back to work for the district attorney's office.
Sentell will start next month at Minden City Court and will likely return to Webster District Court in a few months, District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said.
Marvin said Sentell is "a very capable prosecutor" and is needed to improve operations at Minden City Court, where all cases are misdemeanors. Sentell prosecuted felonies when he was Marvin's top assistant in the Webster Parish Courthouse.
Marvin said Sentell had been cleared of criminal charges and of possible disciplinary action by the bar association. That, along a demotion in his new job and the embarrassment over his arrest, was punishment enough, Marvin said.
"Everybody pays for their sins. He certainly has paid for his," Marvin said. "I believe he has learned from it. I hope the public will say he has suffered enough."
Sentell was arrested last fall after an incident at Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City. Security video showed Marvin twice grab his wife by the arm as they left the casino. The video did not show extreme force being used but police decided to arrest him.
Once placed in the police car to go to jail, Sentell let loose a string of profanities and dropped names of influential people. A police officer said Sentell threatened his job.
Sentell denied threatening anyone's job. His wife said her husband was not abusive and she did not want him prosecuted. The case was reviewed by the state attorney general, who said prosecution was not warranted.
The police officer who accused Sentell of threatening his job got fired over the incident after video from the police car showed no job threat being made. The officer said his report was a mistake; the threat was made after they got out of the patrol car. That officer appealed and got his job back with a suspension.
