City To Offer Water-Rescue Demonstrations

Reacting to the deaths of six teenagers who drowned trying to save another teen in the Red River earlier this month, the city of Shreveport is going to offer free water-rescue demonstrations this Saturday and next.

They will be held at three city pools: David Raines on Round Grove Lane from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Bill Cockrell on Pines Road from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m; and Airport Park on Kennedy Drive from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The purpose of the demonstrations by the Fire Department is to teach people what to do if they are caught in a similar situation.

"We are going to be demonstrating how, if you find yourself in trouble in the water and you can't swim, to save yourself," Fire Chief Brian Crawford said. "And secondly, if you see someone in danger in water and you can't swim, we are going to show you the methods that are used to rescue those people."

The six teens who drowned could not swim. They had gone wading off a sandbar and stepped into a drop-off.

The city will offer free swim lessons next spring.
