Water Woes In Webster

People who are on the Palmetto Waterworks water system in Webster Parish have been dealing with dirty water for nearly a decade.

The problem hasn't changed: They have outdated equipment and not enough money to fix the problem. They've applied for a federal grant, but they're dealing with the government bureaucracy.

"Every time you take a bath you're going to have to wipe it out because it's going to leave nasty rings on it and it stains," said Cyndi Comeaux of Doyline. "I'm not going to drink it and I'm certainly not going to give it to my grandbaby."

In 2001, the Louisiana health department was notified of a problem with Palmetto Waterwork's groundwater system. The water smelled like chemicals, was brown in color and samples showed the supply was not up to par, officials said.

Palmetto officials say their equipment is more than 40 years old. They flush the system regularly to try to improve water quality, and that causes a brownish tint to the water.

In 2008, the Webster Parish Police Jury decided the water system needed to be upgraded. The water system applied for a $750,000 federal grant earlier this year.
