Shreveport beat out two other Louisiana cities to become the location for the newest law school in the state. Wednesday afternoon Louisiana College announced where it will be housed.

One thing that attracted the college to Shreveport is the large legal community in the area, and the possibility of local lawyers and judges to serve as professors.

"Shreveport offers a metropolitan area, with economic and commerce and tremendous opportunity with a large cohort of attorney's through the American Bar Association. The courthouses and the courts are a draw," said Dr. Joe Aguillard, Louisiana College President.

The Louisiana College Judge Paul Pressler School of Law will be located at the corner of Market and Texas streets in downtown Shreveport at the United Mercantile Building. The college plans to do an $80,000 expansion to the building to include lecture halls, a law library student center and basketball court.

School officials say their mission is to provide academic excellence and include God in education. The Dean of the college was also announced; J. Michael Johnson, Esq. will take on that job.

"Obviously this will have a philosophical bend that will have some concern," said Mayor Cedric Glover, "but from my perspective we welcome the presence of this law school in the city of Shreveport. We think it's an asset to our downtown. We think a lot of people will take advantage of the opportunity to gain a legal education."

This will be the only law school within 200 miles of Shreveport, and will also benefit the more than 1,000 lawyers in the region.

The college has received more than $6-million in donations so far, including an anonymous donation of $1.5 million. The $3.1 million building was donated to the college by its owners. The Gorman family in Shreveport also gave $500,000.
