Wooley Agrees To Take Down Oversize Signs

A judge ruled Friday that a lawsuit over the size of some of Shreveport mayoral candidate Bryan Wooley's campaign signs was premature.

Wooley has 10 days from the time the city notified him his signs were too big to remove them, Caddo District Judge Roy Brun ruled on the case brought by local attorney John Settle. That time hasn't elapsed, the judge noted.

Nevertheless, Wooley said his campaign will go ahead and take the signs down starting this weekend.

"We just wanted to show that myself, and my campaign team -- we're good citizens," Wooley said after the hearing. "All we care about is the prosperity of the city, moving this city forward. That's what this campaign's about."

Some of Wooley's campaign signs are larger than city ordinance allows. They have been split down the middle to get each half within the legal limit. Settle said Wooley was thumbing his nose at city law.

"My goal was to get the signs down and he has agreed to that," Settle said. "It takes a lawsuit to get him to comply with the ordinance. If this is what he's going to do, what will he do if he's ever elected mayor?"

Settle said other candidates whose signs are too large will be put on notice, too.

The judge also denied Settle's request to be reimbursed for court costs.

Wooley had agreed before the hearing to take down the signs. Settle wanted to go to court, however, to get a judicial opinion on the issue and to seek reimbursement for his court costs.
