Sheriff: Inmates Had Heart Attacks
Prisoners died within week of each other
Autopsies have determined that two Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center inmates who collapsed and died within a week of each other both suffered heart attacks, Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton said.
The inmate who died in his dormitory had a mild heart attack and apparently did not realize it, Sexton said after being briefed on preliminary autopsy results. The inmate who collapsed while at a work release program had a blood clot in an artery, Sexton said.
Robert Wells, 50, was found unresponsive in the dormitory where he was being held Friday before last. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Minden's hospital.
The second inmate collapsed last Wednesday, shortly after he arrived at a work detail, Sexton said. Anthony Bailey, 43, was taken to the hospital but doctors and nurses could not save him.
Sexton said neither man was known to have serious health problems, although both reported similar patterns of indigestion and elevated blood pressure within a day and a half of their deaths. Both men got medical treatment and time for rest, Sexton said.
Final autopsy results, which will include toxicology tests, are pending, Sexton said.
