Municipal Auditorium To Be Featured In Louisiana Bicentennial
Shreveport's Municipal Auditorium is being incorporated into plans for the celebration of Louisiana's statehood bicentennial.
Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, who was in Shreveport on Monday, said state tourism officials hope to draw thousands of people from around the world to the state for its 200th birthday. He wants Municipal to be a main attraction.
"It's important to remember that great music all starts at the Hayride," Dardenne said. "There's a whole generation of people that don't know that."
Louisiana became a state on April 30, 1812.
Municipal was a key to Elvis Presley's rise to fame. He was a star of the Louisiana Hayride, which was performed at Municipal.
Other stars performed there, too, including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves and Johnny Horton.
An app that acts as a tour guide for visitors is also being developed. It features videos and interviews that tell the stories of Municipal.
