Parents and students can expect healthier school lunches in the coming months, but some area schools are already snacking smarter.

They're called H.U.M.A.N. or "Helping Unite Man And Nutrition" and these healthy vending machines even thank you after making your purchase.

"It's given them an opportunity to have the healthy snacks during the day," said Dan Pickett, Assistant Principal at Airline High School in Bossier City.

Pickett says the students have fully embraced the healthy alternatives, so much so that two machines aren't enough. Airline is requesting a third to keep up with demand.

"The kids like the stuff. They're excited about the stuff and we thought it was neat idea and it met several requirements as far as the wellness plan, the healthy choices," Pickett said.

From chips and granola bars to fruit juice, students have a variety of gluten free, all natural snacking options.

"The response has just been amazing. The machine here sells out by first lunch," said Donnie Hudson, owner of the H.U.M.A.N. Healthy Vending machines.

Hudson says these aren't your average vending machines. In fact, you don't even need cash to make a purchase - just swipe your debit card.

"These machines are the most advanced machines you'll find in the vending business," Hudson explained.

Human Healthy Vending machines are also at C.E. Byrd High School, Calvary Baptist Academy and both the Downtown and Broadmoor Y.M.C.A. facilities.

Hudson says the popularity of these vending machines shows that teens truly are interested in healthier eating.

"They're innovative schools that took the step to bring healthy options to their students."

Hudson hopes to expand the company's reach in the next three months so that even more students in the area have access to healthy options.

Each location that houses a machine receives a commission from the sales.
