West Nile Virus

Extra spraying for West Nile approved! This afternoon at the Bossier City Council meeting, there was a unanimous vote approving to adopt an ordinance appropriating $15,000.00 from the Public Services and Sanitation Fund for additional overtime to spray mosquitoes due to the West Nile Virus. This comes as welcome news since so far this season there have been 1,405 serious illnesses and 118 deaths reported across the county. The bulk of West Nile cases have been reported in Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predict the numbers will surpass the 2002 record of nearly 3,000 severe cases and 284 deaths. Officials are expecting the virus to continue into October; although, the height of the mosquito season is over. The virus can only be spread through a mosquito bite, it is not contagious.
