Arkansas House lawmakers have passed a measure to require pawn shops to electronically upload their records to law enforcement in order to assist in criminal investigations.
By an 82-2 vote on Friday, the House passed a bill mandating that pawn shops and pawnbrokers upload certain records daily to a secure centralized tracking system designated by police. Cities or counties are currently allowed to impose such a requirement on pawn shops in their jurisdiction -- but the bill would require all pawn shops to upload the information.
Pawn shops are already required to collect certain biographical information about a person selling or buying property.
Democratic Rep. Homer Lenderman of Brookland is sponsoring the bill.
