Ark. lawmakers: No rush on tax cut proposals

Arkansas Republicans are in no rush to take up any proposed tax cuts with questions about the state's budget unanswered. But a key legislative leader says he wants a tax-cut package that's larger than the $35 million compromise approved two years ago.

House and Senate leaders say they want to resolve questions about the state's budget and potential cuts in Medicaid before taking up dozens of expected tax cut proposals.

House Revenue and Taxation Committee Chairman Rep. Charlie Collins says he's "very bullish" that large tax cuts can be attained.

Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe proposes a cut in the grocery tax that would depend on certain budget obligations declining. Republicans say they want to look at other options, including income tax cuts and the taxes manufacturers pay for utilities.
