Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper says his department usually sees around five car break-ins a year. In just the past two weeks, they received reports about three times that number. In each case, the owner left his or her vehicle unlocked overnight.

Here are tips to keep you car and your valuables safe:

Lock your car

Roll up windows

Hide possessions from sight

Carry valuables with you

Be alert

Report suspicious behavior to police or security
