The Arklatex office of the Better Business Bureau is cautioning residents about a Mississippi business operating in Shreveport.
Air Rescue Home Services has been advertising in local papers with an offer to clean home air ducts for $69.95. The advertisement says Air Rescue is "Locally owned" with "25 years experience." It also says the company is licensed and insured.
But the company is based near Jackson, Mississippi, and has only been operating since October 2011.
The local BBB warns that the company could be using a "bait and switch" tactic, which promises a low price, then a sales agent tells the homeowner that much more work is needed. Some customers in Shreveport have been told that as much as $3,400 of mold remediation is needed.
"And usually they'll say that there's more to be done than we think can be done for $69.95," said Andy Fisher, president of the Arklatex Better Business Bureau in Shreveport. "They do a bait and switch, and they up the price."
When KTBS showed up Monday to a customer's home with a camera, the workers stopped, got into their cars, and took off. The homeowners didn't want their names mentioned, but said Air Rescue crews told them they needed around $2,000 worth of mold work done.
Diane Rusin, owner of Air Rescue Home Services, told KTBS over the phone that when crews do the duct cleaning they do an evaluation of the home and recommend services they see as necessary.
"That is their decision on whether or not you want that work done," Rusin said. "And it's all thoroughly explained. The prices are laid out. And whether or not they want that done is at their discretion."
Officials with the Better Business Bureau offer these tips:
-Check out the company with the BBB
-Pay attention to the fine print
-Get a second opinion
-File a complaint with the BBB if you feel you've been misled
