A local care center is getting a rare national recognition.

The Breast Care Center at CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier has been granted a three-year full accreditation by the American College of Surgeons.

The award comes from voluntarily giving the highest quality of care to patients and rigorously evaluating staff.

Dr. Dee Barfield said the center is known for treating patients to a spa-like experience without the feeling of a hospital.

"We have robes. We don't use hospital bracelets. We have other forms of identifying people and all those little steps make it feel like you're doing something to help yourself, rather than having a medical procedure," said Barfield.

The American Cancer Society estimates there will be more than 230,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed this year.
