The owner of a Shreveport neighborhood store filed a civil rights lawsuit against the Shreveport Police Department today, alleging officers used excessive force against him during an incident at his store.

The episode involving police officers and Jamal Zeiden was recorded by dash cameras in Shreveport police cars.

It happened last December after police arrested Zeiden's 20-year-old son on charges he bought medicine that had been shoplifted from another store, apparently intending to re-sell it.

The son called his father to come to the Mansfield Road store, which had been locked when he arrived because officers were searching for evidence. The visibly upset Zeiden, with his wife standing nearby, began yelling for police to let him in.

The situation was tense, but it became volatile when a female officer began a routine search of Mrs. Zeiden to make sure she didn't have a gun

Zeiden began to fight with a police officer, A.D. Lane. Video camera from one police car shows Lane put Zeiden on the hood of a police car and deliver a couple of blows to the struggling man in an effort to subdue him.

Five officers wrestled Zeiden to the ground and handcuffed him. One officer stepped in and shoved him with his foot and another zapped him with a taser.

Zeiden suffered bruises, cuts and scrapes and was taken to a hospital before being taken to jail.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, seeks unspecified damages for false arrest, use of excessive force and civil rights violations.

Police declined comment on the suit's specifics but said necessary force was used and no disciplinary action was taken against the officers.

Zeiden, 42, was charged with interfering with an officer. His criminal case is pending in Caddo District Court. His son was charged with illegally carrying a weapon and possession of marijuana. His case is also pending.
