GREAT is a program that provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to participate in equine assisted activities that benefits them in the areas of education, therapy and recreation. Under the direction of The Arc Caddo-Bossier, GREAT has been offering these services to people in our community and surrounding areas for over 12 years. GREAT runs the only NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Member Center in North Louisiana. The program is open to all who can benefit from it. GREAT serves students from across seven parishes and counties in North Louisiana and East Texas. GREAT’s students come from the Caddo Parish School’s Adaptive Physical Education Program, Shriner’s Hospital Riding Program and many different areas of the community. GREAT has fourteen therapy horses, three NARHA Certified Instructors, and over 30 trained volunteers. GREAT provides over 1,700 rides per year. GREAT volunteers provide over 5,000 hours yearly.
GREAT’s growth and presence in the community is a testament to the belief in the many benefits children and adults with disabilities receive from participating in the program. Therapeutic horseback riding has brought a quality of life to our students they did not know before. For many students, the experience has been life changing.
