Commissioner makes moves for tougher gun laws

The Caddo Commission will soon enter the gun control debate. Commissioner Michael Williams will propose an ordinance that, if passed, further limits where concealed weapons can be carried. He's also drafted a resolution, which requests state lawmakers to give more firearm regulation to local jurisdictions.

"Right now, we don't have anything prohibiting anyone to walk into a building with gun or knife on any public parish facility," Williams said.

His ordinance bans weapons specifically from parish buildings. It's an amendment to a law already barring weapons from court facilities. Williams says the city has a similar ordinance.

"They have the same type of ordinance in place," Williams said. "It is prohibited to carry any concealed weapon or knife in any of their public facilities. We do not have that in the parish."

The resolution requests the repeal of the state preemption of local firearm regulation. Right now, local governments only control where guns can be carried, but Williams wants local regulation of ownership, sale and much more.

"Decide what type of weapons we want to be sold during gun shows, at pawn shops, and at Walmart," Williams said.

Commissioners will hear the proposal during Monday's work session. That meeting will be held at 3:30 pm at Government Plaza.
