Curbside recycling crews were back on the streets today to finish the first round of Shreveport's new recycling program.
It started on Monday but crews from Pratt Industries, the private company that is doing curbside recycling, had some start-up problems and didn't make it to every house.
Crews were back in several areas of southeast Shreveport today to finish the job.
Mike Strong, director of the city's Department of Operational Services, said there were some first-day glitches but he said the program was successful overall.
"You add all this up, we had a flew glitches," Strong said, but overall, it's successful."
Pratt Industries' Jim Drake said approximately 80 percent of the homes on the pickup routes participated in recycling.
One of the reasons first-day recycling was slow, Strong said, was that so many recycling bins were full. The bins had been delivered two months ago and many were full, so recycling trucks filled up faster. Two of Pratt's trucks also broke down, Strong said.
The biggest reason for the delays, Drake said, was that a lot of the blue bins were not in place to where the collection trucks' automated systems could reach them. Crews had to get out of their trucks and guide the bins into the system, he said.
Pratt will add three trucks and 10 people to their collection crews, Drake said.
