The first weapons ban came in 1934, when gangsters like Al Capone terrorized U.S. cities with the Tommy Gun. The next federal firearm ban on semi-automatic quote "assault weapons" was enacted in 1994 and expired 10 years later. It banned the possession and the manufacture of weapons with certain features. That legislation defined semi-automatic assault weapons by listing 19 specific guns, and further banning semi-automatic weapons that had detachable magazines plus two more tactical features. That definition remained roughly the same for 18 years. While handguns remain the most used firearm in crimes, several of the recent mass shooters have used semi-automatic rifles. Tomorrow, Senator Dianne Feinstein introduces a new assault weapons ban which would re-define assault weapons. Her proposed legislation expands the definition of assault weapon to 120 specifically named weapons, and semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine, or a magazine holding more than 10 rounds, plus one other tactical feature, down from the previous two features. Covered by the previous ban and assumed to be on the list tomorrow is the AR-15. The telescoping stock is specifically mentioned in the legislation,. Feinstein will introduce her bill to the senate tomorrow. It exempts over nine hundred weapons used for hunting and sporting, and also would not ban antique firearms
