A man who fled from a Caddo Parish sheriff's deputy after a traffic stop -- and then crashed into another vehicle as he fled -- was found later in a west Shreveport motel room.

Deputies said they found 77 pounds of marijuana in the motel room. The man, along with a woman who was with him, were arrested after a brief scuffle in which the man was subdued with a Taser.

The incident started about 8 p.m. Sunday in far west Caddo Parish when a sheriff's deputy pulled a car over for a traffic violation. The deputy, Gary Bailey, became suspicious the driver had drugs and was about to search the car when the driver jumped in the car and took off.

The chase went in to Shreveport, where the fleeing motorist crashed into the back of a sport utility vehicle near Pines Road. The deputy, who had backed off the chase because it was too dangerous in the heavy traffic, stopped to help those in the wreck. No one in the SUV was seriously hurt, deputies said.

Deputies started checking motel parking lots in the area and found the heavily damaged suspect vehicle in the parking lot of the Guest House motel on Monkhouse Drive about 10:15 p.m.

Thomas Williams, 36, and Sabrina Jones, 32, both of Jackson, Miss., were arrested inside one of the rooms. Deputies said the couple had checked in after the wreck.

Both the man and the woman have been booked on drug charges. The man also faces an assortment of traffic charges.
