The Texas Department of Transportation is completing its first phase of planning for the Interstate 69/Trans Texas Corridor by holding a series of meetings around the state.

The proposed north-south interstate will go through East Texas and highway department is getting input from residents on what route the corridor should take. Environmental impacts are also being studied.

One meeting was held in Marshall Thursday night. The majority of the 13 people who spoke were opposed to the new interstate, although Marshall Mayor Ed Smith said he thought most of his constituents are in favor of it.

Officials are considering converting existing highways, such as U.S. 59, into parts of the interstate.

DOT says a projected 60 percent increase in population in East Texas over the next 30 years makes the interstate necessary.

Part of the highway is expected to run through Northwest Louisiana, including parts of DeSoto Parish.
