Elio Motors preps for Shreveport
There's still some time to go and papers to sign before Elio Motors officially owns the Shreveport GM plant. The company's marketing vice president Chip Stempeck says the startup isn't just idly waiting.
"One hundred percent of our effort is getting the vehicle ready and getting the public ready for our vehicle," Stempeck said.
The company and it's suppilers have been preparing for the manufacturing of three wheeled vehicles, which will be built in Shreveport. A summit between the two wrapped up just this week. Stempeck says that doesn't mean jobs are closer to being available but will be in 12 to 14 months.
"What that will allow us to do is hire folks for the plant, the bulk of the hiring, and have our first vehicles roll out in the summer of 2014," he said.
Stembeck says Elio Motor's marketing phase has also kicked off recently.
"So, we've got Facebook and Twitter and all those sorts of things to begin engaging with our consumer, which has been crazy good so far," he said.
As of now, the company will focus on U.S. consumers, but Stempeck says the company will expand to foreign markets in the future.
"After that, we believe there is a tremendous market outside the United States, and we will attack that with a vengeance when the time comes," Stembeck said.
Elio Motors should be fully operating by 2015.
