Evangelist Tony Alamo left Arizona for Texarkana in the custody of federal marshals today, preparing to answer to charges he took children across state lines for criminal purposes.

State and federal agents raided Alamo's compound in Fouke on Sept. 20, searching for evidence children there had been molested or filmed having sex.

He was arrested after authorities took six girls, ages 10 to 17, from the compound, placed them in state custody and began interviewing them. Officials have declined to say what the girls told them and an arrest warrant for Alamo remains sealed in federal court.

Alamo, 74, was arrested late last month at a hotel in Flagstaff, Ariz.

U.S. Marshal Richard O'Connell of Fort Smith said Alamo is en route to Texarkana, but declined to offer further details.

Alamo has not been indicted by a federal grand jury. A new grand jury was sworn in last week in Fort Smith, where the evidence would be presented.

Patrick Beneca of Little Rock, who is one of Alamo's lawyers, said he visited the evangelist last week in Flagstaff, Ariz. Beneca said Alamo maintains his innocence.
