FORT POLK, La. - Fort Polk will host a Veteran's Day Commemoration and Global War on Terrorism Memorial Monument groundbreaking ceremony, at 11 a.m., Thurs. Nov. 8, at Warrior Memorial Park, here.
The GWOT Memorial Monument honors the Soldiers, Families, and civilians whose support and sacrifice will forever be remembered. The memorial is constructed of two black granite towers representing the twin towers.
Centered between the towers is a globe to represent the Global War on Terror. Both carvings rest on a Pentagon shaped platform. The names of all Soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice in either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom Soldiers will be engraved on the left tower. On the right tower will be all the units deployed or mobilized in support of GWOT since 9-11.
Construction of the memorial will begin in winter 2008. A mock up of the GWOT memorial concept will be unveiled during the ceremony.
