In 1993, a gallon of regular unleaded cost just over one dollar. At the same time, Frank Koerner had a natural gas dispenser at his gas station. He touted natural gas as the alternative fuel of the future. It proved to complicated to use and to hard to sell the public on it's safety.15 years later, what does Koerner think of today's alternative fuels, which use electricity and gasoline. "You stick a plug in a wall socket and your batteries charge up and that makes a lot of sense because of the simplicity of it," said Koerner.Another short term solution is mixed fuels with ethanol. But Koerner says, since it has to be made with corn and that drives up the price of food.Koerner expects to see another gas -- hydrogen -- eventually powering vehicles in the future.Koerner says compressed natural gas is still good for commercian vehicles like buses and trucks. He says cities have the money to buy the needed equipment to pump and use it.
