Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said this afternoon he and Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover will meet with executives of General Motors on Aug. 15 to try to convince them to reconsider their decision to eliminate one of two productions shifts at the company's Shreveport plant. Nearly 800 jobs are scheduled to be eliminated at the end of September.

The automaker is losing billions of dollars because of declining demand for the vehicles it makes, particularly pickups and SUVs. It wants to make 300,000 fewer vehicles this year.

Jindal stopped at Shreveport Regional Airport late this afternoon to announce the trip to Detroit.

He said he will do "whatever it takes," including additional tax incentives, to convince GM not to drastically cut production at the Shreveport plant, which makes mid-size pickups for Chevy and GMC and SUVs for Hummer.

Due to high gas prices, U.S. consumers are buying a lot pickups and SUVs.

GM said it has to cut production to stem losses, which topped $15 billion last quarter. It is also looking at selling its Hummer line.

It plans to cut the evening shift at the Shreveport plant.
