A Caddo Commissioner hopes to keep guns and other weapons away from parish property. It's a move to make you safer from gun violence, but not all commissioners are on board. It seems there may be mixed opinions on the streets about Commissioner Michael William's ordinance that amends a current law that bans weapons in court facilities. Williams wants to ban them from all parish facilities, unincorporated areas like Blanchard and even parks; such as the Eddie D Jones Park.

"It's a cleanup measure," Williams said. "It just added all parish facilities."

His ordinance seems have other commissioners' support, but a resolution Williams proposed doesn't. It requests the state let parish governments decide and handle their own firearm regulation. Commissioner Michael Thibodeaux says things are fine the way they are.

"I think that if the current laws are handled then we're in good shape," Thibodeaux said. "I think we are asking to get ourselves into a big mess if we give 64 parishes the right to have separate gun control laws."

Williams wants local firearm regulation to keep powerful, multi-round guns off parish streets.

"We want to govern what goes on here in Caddo Parish if we can do what we can to make it safer," he said. "To allow guns to get into the wrong hand of individuals, we need to take those guns out of circulation here in Caddo Parish."

Commissioners will vote on the ordinance and resolution at their next meeting on March 27th.
