WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal public health emergency has been declared in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt made the call today to ensure that Hurricane Gustav evacuees get the health services for which they qualify.

The declaration helps those covered by Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program in the four states get their health care items and services even after they leave their homes.
