It used to be that everybody had a home phone. Now, that's not always the case.

There are million more cell phones than traditional land lines in Louisiana. Some people say it's because going wireless is cheaper. They do not miss any calls but do avoid solicitors.

There are downsides to disconnecting a land line. "The only disadvantage I would say is people who don't have our cell phone numbers don't have a way to get in touch with us," said Carla Richardson.

Another disadvantage: not all 9-1-1 centers are equipped to track where cell phone calls are coming from.
