Shreveport police and Caddo sheriff's deputies have rounded up the remainder of the unexpected herd. They found most of the cows on the Inner Loop, which is an extension of I-220. Some cows were killed.
The wreck happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. There were 117 yearlings on board the truck and the load shifted as the truck went into a sharp turn -- sending it rolling on its side.
An estimated 23 cattle were killed. More than a dozen died in the trailer, others were hit by vehicles and some fell off a bridge. No drivers were hurt.
By midnight, some of the yearlings decided to lie down in the highway median.
Law officers, including the sheriff's stock patrol, found cattle as far away as Walker and Jefferson-Paige roads. They were taken to a deputy's ranch until their owner could make arrangements to get them.
A Shreveport firefighter involved in the roundup was slightly hurt when he got sprayed in the face with hydraulic fluid. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The cattle truck driver, Donnie Bennett, 43, of Kansas, was not expected to be ticketed, police said.
The carcasses of the cows that were killed have been donated to Yogi and Friends, a lions and tigers sanctuary in Frierson.
