A storm packing high winds moved across northeast Texas and southwest Arkansas this morning, damaging several houses in Leary, Texas, and blowing over three 18-wheelers and closing a stretch of Interstate 30.
The storm moved off to the east this afternoon and a tornado watch that was in effect for much of the ArkLaTex expired. I-30 west of Texarkana was reopened late this afternoon.
The worst damage was in Leary, a small town 10 miles west of Texarkana along I-30 where the trucks overturned. There were no injuries but a lawn mower repair business was destroyed and a mobile home and four houses were damaged. Two barns were blown away and several trees were knocked down. The Leary school was not damaged but classes were canceled when it lost power.
It was not known early this afternoon if it was a tornado or straight-line winds. The National Weather Service will survey the damage on Friday to determine whether it was a twister.
Two American Eagle flights out of Shreveport Regional Airport were canceled this morning due to the weather. Another factor was the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Dallas-Fort Worth airport because much of American Airlines' fleet of MD-80 jets have been grounded for inspections.
Swepco reported almost 5,000 customers without power from Longview to Texarkana at one point. The outages were down to 1,200, all in Caddo Parish, this evening. Fouke, Ark., located south of Texarkana, had dismissed classes this morning because of a power outage that affected the town.
The 18-wheelers were blown over by high winds that threw parts of trees across the highway. Two truckers suffered minor injuries.
Wind damage to trees, power lines and some property was reported in several counties: Camp, Cass, Marion, Red River, Upshur and Wood in East Texas and McCurtain County in Oklahoma.
