U.S. Attorney Jim Letten of New Orleans said he has no information on a possible commutation of former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards' prison sentence for corruption, although he has responded to a Justice Department inquiry about it.

Letten, who prosecuted Edwards, said Thursday that his office provided information the Justice Department asked for. He would not disclose specifics.

Two years ago, Edwards, who was governor of Louisiana for 16 years, petitioned the president for a commutation of his sentence, which would cut short the prison time he still has to serve. He did not ask for a pardon, which legally wipes the slate clean.

Edwards, 81, has served six years of a 10-year sentence for extorting money for riverboat gambling licenses during his last term in office.

Letten said he thinks Edwards received "an extremely fair sentence."
