Shreveport's Cross Lake was closed to boat traffic this afternoon as people who live and work in low-lying areas along or near it prepared for possible flooding.

The lake's spillway gates are open, but with the record-setting amount of rain that fell overnight and more expected tonight, flooding is a real possibility, officials warned.

The lake is expected to crest two feet above flood stage on Thursday, said Mike Strong, director of the city's Department of Operational Services.

The tributaries that feed Cross Lake are already at flood stage.

A lot of people who live on the lake say it's the highest they've seen the water since the flood of 1991.

City officials' concerns are that if there is more rain overnight, all that additional water flowing into the lake will cause flooding that goes beyond yards and gets into houses.

There were no signs of flooding this afternoon.
